Learning Math at Minim: More than just worksheets!

Learning Math at Minim: More than just worksheets!

Dear Minim Family,

We hope you are well! Last time, we featured our ukulele classes and shared how we teach them. This week, we would like to put the spotlight on our afterschool math classes.

Making Math Fun

At Minim, we focus on the joy of learning and the wonder of the world around us. Math is a core subject children will carry through their whole education journey, and in our afterschool classes we take the time to really explore the math that is already all around them.

Everything begins with number awareness. Here are a few of the ways we have started class:

  • How many friends are there in the class? (counting 1 to 20)
  • Number matching with Uno cards (number comparison)
  • Matching levels of volume with numbers (number awareness)
  • Let's measure the length of our hands! (understanding numbers 1 to 100)
  • Which creature has 2 feet? 4 feet? 6 legs? (number grouping, skip counting, an introduction to multiplication)
  • Using shapes around us to form patterns (building logic)
  • Let's form a human snake and ladder game! (number awareness, addition, subtraction)

These hands-on activities get children working together and building their understanding of numbers as a team.

Nurturing Something More Than Math

In the Minim classroom, math is the vehicle. What we are actually building is something bigger than math: the 6 Cs. Every class encourages children to bring these values to life.

  • Creativity: spotting math around them and suggesting themes and activities
  • Critical Thinking: working through math challenges
  • Confidence: finding the fun in solving a challenge
  • Collaboration: working as a team in the classroom
  • Compassion: older children tackling more advanced challenges so younger children can take on the simpler ones
  • Curiosity: the spark that makes a child spot math around them even after class ends

What About Worksheets?

Writing and solving math equations on worksheets is something children will need to learn to do over their education journey, and we do provide simple tasks in the World of Numbers classes from time to time for children to complete in their free time. World of Numbers itself, though, is built around collaboration and the joy of discovering math around us: a hands-on approach to the subject.

Worksheets are more carefully curated in the Minim Math Club classes, a small-group setting where children learn together and receive feedback on their progress at the end of the school year.

For a fully personalized math program paced to your child's own ability, the Minim Math Academy hones math foundations one-on-one, at an academic level.

Whether it is World of Numbers, Minim Math Club, or Minim Math Academy, we give the same care and curation to help every child enjoy the journey of learning. We look forward to growing this community together and bringing enriching, engaging classes to the next generation.
