5 Lessons from Teaching Math to International School Kids in Tokyo

Hello Minim Family,

Our Math team sat down recently to compare notes after another term of lessons across Tokyo's international schools, and the same thing kept surfacing: children almost never struggle with math for a single, tidy reason. Each child arrives with a different mix of confidence, gaps, and history with the subject.

So instead of another "how to get ahead in math" piece, we wanted to share the five lessons that have genuinely changed how we teach it. They are as much for you at the kitchen table as for us in the lesson.

The short version. Teaching math to kids in Tokyo has taught us that confidence usually matters more than raw ability, that real progress starts by meeting a child exactly where they are rather than where the grade level says they should be, and that understanding why an answer works beats getting it quickly. From our Math Academy lessons across more than twelve Tokyo international schools, using Singapore Math methods, here are the five lessons that shape how we teach, and how you can use each one at home.

Lesson 1: Math struggles are usually emotional before they are academic

The most common thing we meet is not a child who cannot do the math. It is a child who has quietly decided they are "bad at math," and has stopped trying to protect themselves from feeling that way.

Fear of the wrong answer, the sting of falling behind friends, one topic that went badly and now gets avoided: these do more damage than any missing concept. A child bracing against embarrassment will not take the small risks that learning actually requires.

Confidence is the first thing we teach, and it is often the only thing standing between a child and the math they are already capable of.

What helps, at home and in lessons, is lowering the stakes. Start with problems a child can definitely do, raise the difficulty in steps small enough that they barely notice, use visual tools so the math feels concrete, and make a genuine fuss of progress rather than perfection.

Lesson 2: Real progress starts by meeting a child where they actually are

Teaching to the grade level printed on the box does not work. A Year 4 child with a shaky grasp of place value will not thrive in Year 4 material, however neatly it matches their age.

This is why every child at our Math Academy begins with an aptitude conversation in the very first lesson rather than a fixed curriculum. We are looking for the real starting point, including the quiet gaps a busy classroom can miss, and we would far rather go back and rebuild a foundation than paper over it.

It is also why we ask parents so many questions, and keep asking. You see the homework battles and the good days we never witness. That fuller picture is what lets us adjust the difficulty in real time.

Lesson 3: Understanding the process matters more than the right answer

Plenty of children reach the right answer by guessing, rushing, or memorising a trick they do not really understand. It works until it doesn't, usually a year or two later, when new topics lean on foundations that were never quite there.

So in lessons we try not to say "right" or "wrong" too quickly. Instead we ask a child to walk us through how they got there. Half the time they catch their own slip mid-explanation. The other half, they realise they understood more than they gave themselves credit for.

A child who can explain their thinking owns the math in a way a child who only has the answer never will.

You can do exactly this at home with one question: "How did you work that out?" Ask it when they are right, not only when they are wrong, so it never lands as a trap.

Lesson 4: Motivation comes from adjusting the method, not pushing harder

When a child loses focus, the instinct is to ask for more effort. In our experience the fix is almost always on our side of the table, not theirs.

Attention and stamina vary enormously between children, and in the same child from one day to the next. So we break a lesson into shorter segments, fold in a little gamification, plan real breaks before a child hits the wall, and bring in hands-on materials and movement for the children who think with their hands.

The Singapore Math approach we use helps here, because it is built to move from concrete objects, to pictures, to abstract numbers, in that order. That keeps a younger child anchored in something they can see and touch before the numbers turn abstract.

Lesson 5: Parents are the other half of the equation

The breakthroughs we are proudest of almost never happen in the lesson alone. They happen when a teacher and a parent are comparing notes and adjusting together.

Being your child's partner in math, though, does not mean being their teacher. Many parents tell us that trying to teach their own child turns into a fight faster than almost anything else (a feeling we wrote about in why I cannot teach my own child). Your job is warmth and encouragement. The correcting is ours.

What to ask your child's math teacher

  • Where is my child actually starting, and where are the real gaps?
  • What will progress look like this term, in plain language?
  • What is one small thing we can do at home that helps rather than adds pressure?
  • How will we know when the difficulty needs adjusting, up or down?
  • How do you keep it low-stakes for a child who is already anxious about math?

When extra math help isn't the answer

We would rather say this plainly than sign your child up for something they do not need.

If your child is doing fine and still enjoys math, they may need nothing beyond school. Confidence intact and curiosity alive is the whole goal, and a lesson piled on top can quietly tell a content child that something must be wrong.

If the real problem is a packed week, adding a math lesson to an already tired child rarely helps. Protect the calm slot in the day first, and revisit later.

And if what you need is homework supervision or help with next week's specific test, that is a different job from ours. Our Math Academy and afterschool Math Club build mathematical thinking and confidence over time; neither is a substitute for a same-week tutor, and we will tell you so.

Frequently asked questions

My child says they are "bad at math." Where do we even start?
Start with the feeling, not the math. A child who believes they are bad at it has usually stopped taking the small risks that learning needs. Rebuild confidence with problems they can genuinely do, raise the difficulty in steps they barely notice, and praise the effort and the reasoning rather than the score. The ability is almost always already there, waiting for the confidence to catch up.

What is Singapore Math, and why do you use it?
Singapore Math is the teaching approach used in Singapore's own schools, whose students have topped international assessments like TIMSS for years. It moves deliberately from concrete objects, to pictures, to abstract numbers, so a child understands why a method works before memorising it. We use it because it builds the kind of understanding that holds up as the math gets harder.

How do I help with math at home without it becoming a fight?
Keep your role to warmth and encouragement, and leave the correcting to the teacher. Ask "how did you work that out?" when your child is right, not only when they are wrong, so the question feels safe. Keep it low-stakes and casual (the same idea we wrote about in the power of casual practice), and protect a calm time of day, because a tired child at six in the evening learns very little.

At what age should extra math support start?
There is no fixed age. It is less about when and more about signs: a child avoiding math, a widening gap with the class, or a shaky foundation that keeps causing careless mistakes. Caught early and gently, a small amount of the right support goes a long way.

How do you decide what level to teach my child?
We begin every child with an aptitude conversation in the first lesson rather than assuming their grade level, then keep adjusting based on what we see and what you tell us from home. Meeting a child where they actually are is the whole foundation of how we teach.
